Fires Down
Put Out.
Carlisle & Eden Crime and Reduction Partnership (CDRP) and
Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service have reason to be pleased with
the most recent British Crime Survey comparator figures for the
period April to July 2007. These statistics show a drop of 6%
overall for fires throughout North Cumbria.
Between April and July 2006 there were a total of 404 recorded
incidents broken down as follows 64 incidents relating to car
fires. 268 incidents relating to rubbish fires / wheelie bin fires.
17 malicious / hoax incidents and 55 incidents relating to fires in
other locations such as sheds / bus shelters.
During the same period this year there were a total of 260
recorded incidents, an overall drop of 144 incidents. The incident
breakdown is as follows:
45 incidents relating to car fires a drop of 19 incidents. This
reduction has occurred as a result of the close co-operation
between agencies to identify perpetrators of deliberate fires,
gathering evidence for prosecution and implementing arson reduction
strategies.
167 incidents relating to rubbish fires / wheelie bin fires, a
drop of 237 incidents These are being reduced by Arson audits in
the Carlisle and Eden area by the appropriate agencies, involving
identifying flammable materials or rubbish and ensuring it is
removed or secured as quickly as possible.
12 malicious / hoax incidents a drop of 5 incidents, this is
because malicious calls to emergency services are easily traced
through British Telecom's system X call handling software.
Additionally there are other software systems available to the
Multi Agency Problem Solving Unit (MAPS), which enable partners to
identify calls from mobile telephones and the location of a
particular mobile phone at the time of any malicious call.
There has also been significant reduction in incidents relating
to fires at other locations such as sheds / bus shelters, a
dropping from 36 to 19.
The current CDRP priorities, which include contributing to a
high quality of life for all, and creating an environment where
people can feel secure and live without the threat or fear of crime
are reflected in these performance figures. They are a testament to
the hard work and dedication of all of the partners involved in
helping to make Carlisle and Eden among the safest places to live
in the country.
Mary Robinson Chair of Carlisle & Eden CDRP said:
