Date of issue: Monday, 14 September 2009
The winners of a summer Tri-Golf Festival in Carlisle will
represent their city at national sporting competition in
Loughborough on Wednesday (16 September).
Ten Newlaithes Junior School children, from year six, will
represent Carlisle after they beat off competition from other
Carlisle schools at a city event, held at Richard Rose Central
Academy, in July this year.
Nine junior schools, each with ten representative students, aged
between 8 and 10 years old, competed in the golfing challenge.
Organised by Carlisle City Council and ten local ‘Step Into Sport’
volunteers from each of the secondary schools across the city. The
event was part of a national Golf Foundation initiative being
rolled out across the country. Each student received a medal,
certificate and goodie bag from the Golf Foundation for taking
part.
Carlisle City Cllr Ray Bloxham portfolio holder for Environment
and Infrastructure, said:
"Tri-Golf encourages children to learn golf in a
fun environment, introducing them to both the technical skills and
etiquette of the sport. Getting children involved in golf at this
age is so important. I’d like to wish all the Newlaithes Junior
schoolchildren the best of luck in the national competition."
Co-ordinated by Carlisle City Council and partners – the School
Sports Partnership; Cumbria Golf Development Officer; Fesco Officer
(Further Education Sports Co-ordinator) and Cumbria Sport -each
school could get five hours training each, by local golf pros as
part of the build up to the Carlisle event.
