International Peace Day
Community asked to celebrate global ‘Peace Day’
(Date of issue: Friday, 16 September 2011)
Carlisle community groups and schools are being asked to
celebrate next Wednesday’s (21 September) International Day of
Peace.
It is the third time the city has taken part in the global event
and the Carlisle Equality and Diversity Partnership is also asking
local residents to make their own individual peace pledge.
The partnership aims raise some basic awareness of the
international event, as part of the build up to a large scale
Carlisle-based event in 2012.
The International Day of Peace ("Peace Day") provides an
opportunity for individuals, organisations and nations to create
practical acts of peace on a shared date. It was established by a
United Nations resolution in 1981 to coincide with the opening of
the General Assembly. The first Peace Day was celebrated in
September 1982.
Last year, nearly 200 million people took part around the
world.
