Local Democracy Week 2010
Local Democracy Week takes place each October and this is the
tenth year that Carlisle City Council has organised events for
Carlisle schools marking this national campaign.

What is Local Democracy Week?
It was originally set up by the Local Government Association to
get local authorities to organise events and activities to
encourage residents, communities and schools to take a more active
part in decision-making.

Young Mayor 2010
Each year, up to five primary schools take part in the Young
Mayor event. A candidate from each school presents their manifesto
and say why they would make a good Young Mayor. The invited
audience of classmates, parents, City Council Members and staff
cast their votes, using polling booths and ballot boxes and the
winning candidate is announced.

This event gives the young people a taste of what it is like to
take part in a debate as well as follow the formal process of a
council meeting, as it takes it all happens in the Council Chamber.
This year The Mayor of Carlisle, Cllr Mary Styth, will chair the
event.
