Carlisle City Council Elections – 2010

Carlisle City Council elections were held on Thursday, 6 May 2010. Polling stations were open between 7am and 10pm.

The election count was held at The Sands Centre this morning (Friday, 7 May).

City Council elections were held in 17 of the city’s 22 wards:

Belah; Belle Vue; Brampton; Botcherby; Castle; Currock; Dalston; Denton Holme; Harraby; Longtown & Rockcliffe; Morton; St Aidans; Stanwix Rural; Stanwix Urban; Upperby; Wetheral and Yewdale.

A By Election was also in Irthing ward on the same day.

  • Total number of eligible voters 76,763

Returning Officer - Maggie Mooney (City Council Town Clerk and Chief Executive)

There was a 64.5% overall turnout (49,515 votes cast).

  • Labour 23 seats
  • Liberal Democrats 5 seats
  • Independent 2 seat
  • Vacant 0 seats

In 2008, City Council elections were held in 17 wards. There was a 38.1% overall turnout (25,425 votes cast). The composition of the Council after the 2008 election (and a subsequent Upperby By-Election):

  • Liberal Democrats 7 seats
  • Independent 1 seat
