Local Democracy Week

Local Democracy Week takes place each October and this is the eighth year that Carlisle City Council has organised events for Carlisle schools marking this national campaign.

What is Local Democracy Week?

It was originally set up by the Local Government Association to get local authorities to organise events and activities to encourage residents, communities and schools to take a more active part in decision-making.

What events are happening?

  • Young Mayor Event – Monday 13 October

Each year, up to five primary schools take part in the Young Mayor event. A candidate from each school presents their manifesto and say why they would make a good Young Mayor. The invited audience of classmates, parents, City Council Members and staff cast their votes, using polling booths and ballot boxes and the winning candidate is announced.

This event gives the young people a taste of what it is like to take part in a debate as well as follow the formal process of a council meeting, as it takes it all happens in the Council Chamber and The Mayor of Carlisle chairs the event.

This year candidates will be announced on Thursday 9 October.

  • Political Speed Dating – Tuesday 14 October

This is aimed at secondary aged pupils and as the name says it is speed dating with a slight difference. Speed dating rules apply, students will interview up to 10 councillors for three minutes and assess each councillor on their approachability, listening skills, ability to understand issues as well as answering specific questions and the likelihood of a student voting for them.

This year’s school putting Carlisle City Councillors through their paces is Newman School.
