Disability Scheme

The Council’s Disability Scheme was first published in December 2006. Its purpose is to promote Disability Equality and ensure that disable people have the same opportunities and choice as non-disabled people.

As this was the first scheme of its kind developed by the Council, it has since been reviewed in consultation with disabled groups in Carlisle. The revised scheme was published in February 2008.

The Council is committed to ensuring a high quality of life for all in both its urban and rural communities. Disability is one of six strands in the Equalities Agenda that will lead to a more inclusive, cohesive society. The other strands are Age, Race, Gender, Religion or Belief,  Sexual Orientation. The Council has also adopted Rurality (addressing rural needs) as a further equality strand.

Improvement activities that are required in Carlisle relating to disability and the other strands are contained within the Equalities Action Plan.   The actions contained within this plan have been developed in discussion with disabled people during the twelve months since the Disability Scheme was first published. The Equalities Action Plan is reviewed on a quarterly basis.
