Page updated 09/01/2012

Areas of work:

Communications
  • Protect and enhance the reputation of the Council, ensuring efficient and proactive media relations to increase understanding our priorities.
  • Inform and increase equality of access to services, ensuring that communications meet the needs of community groups particularly those that are potentially vulnerable
  • Support Members in their work as community leaders
  • Work in partnerships that benefit the local community, supporting neighbourhood working which will involve local people in developing services that meet their needs
  • Internal communications - use established communication channels and develop new ones so employees and Members are able to carry out their roles effectively.
  • Provide opportunity for feedback.
Consultation

The Council undertakes a wide range of consultation on policies and proposals as well as gathering information about satisfactions and how our services can improve.  We also work in partnership with other organisations to conduct joint consultation work.

Information and Transparency

The Council is committed to transparency and making information available and accessible to the public.  This includes dealing with Freedom of Information requests, Environmental Requests, Publication Scheme and Data Protection.

It is hoped that through Rural Voice we can help to unravel and de-mystify the complex programmes happening at a local, regional and national level and highlight what it means for rural Carlisle.

Other Yes

The Council's Communication and Consultation policies promote local peoples’ involvement in the design and delivery of more responsive, local services. The Council works closely with local groups representing those that are in a minority in our local communities, including those with a disability and ethnic minorities, to ensure their communications and consultation needs are met.

Publishing information promotes openness and transparency, widening public access to information. Freedom of Information has proved to be a useful way of questioning the level of activity on areas of public interest.

There are a low number of equality and diversity issues in frequently asked requests.  The most popular request relating to equality and diversity relates to disabled facility grants.  General details about grants are published in the Council’s accounts, however, detailed information must be specifically requested.

Contact from Information Commissioner and feedback on unsatisfactory responses.  No equality and diversity issues have been highlighted.
