Bridge and broker the gap between the City Council and the community; creating and supporting sustainable community groups

Health
  • The Wellbeing Team aims to promote health & wellbeing to Carlisle's communities through the provision of health improvement activities and includes the initiation, promotion, support & development of health improvement projects targeting the local population.  
  • These activities allow engagement with a wide variety of groups and empower communities to make choices which lead to positive changes to improve their health. 

Work with partners to achieve the targets in the Healthy City Improvement Plan.

Co-ordinate a partnership approach to narrowing the gap, improving the quality of life for local people and creating healthy communities

Children and Young People

With partners, develop joint and collective opportunities for children and young people to thrive and reach their potential

To act as a champion for young people, ensuring their voices are heard

Creating opportunities for children and young people to become involved in the work and decision making processes of the Council and contributing to strategies seeking to improve the health and wellbeing of children and young people

Sports and Physical Activity

With key partners review our approach to improve the cultural offer of the city through effective and efficient joint working with Carlisle Leisure and other partners on health and physical activity programmes

To co-ordinate and support sports and physical activity

The Wellbeing Team aims to enhance people’s lives through the provision of a range of leisure and physical activities.  These activities are an ideal vehicle to deal with a variety of issues, from anti-social behaviour, health, community regeneration, crime and social inclusion.
 Inclusion Develop inclusive activity, targeting hard to reach groups

 

Creating socially inclusive communities

To help promote community inclusion to respond to issues which may restrict inclusion and to be proactive in supporting or leading on initiatives to address them. To work across all age groups and areas of the City Urban and Rural

Provide support for targeted groups including children and young people; families in disadvantaged areas, active older people, black and minority ethnic groups and people with disabilities.

The team has an important role in supporting community activity across all age ranges. Activities accessible to people of all ages – many projects aimed at children and young people and older people and are aimed at increasing participation in particular young and older people.

Yes Appropriate adaptations made to ensure projects and events are accessible to people with disabilities.

The Community Development Officer for Inclusion is trained in the use of Makaton to deliver a range of physical activity for young people

Through the development of multi-cultural programmes eg  Holocaust Day, International Day of Peace, Multi-Cultural Carlisle, Culture Bazaar. The aim is to increase awareness of different cultures and religions and promote community cohesion

Yes Activities accessible to people of all sexual orientations. Create links between PINC (Pride in North Cumbria) and groups that the team interact with

Yes Activities accessible to people of all religions. The team will work with groups to develop equality and diversity policies. Specific attention is given to religious festivals and making sure activity is delivered at appropriate times    

Health inequalities

Yes

The team develop and deliver projects focusing on the area of health and work in partnership with a range of partners to improve the health of Carlisle's population eg Delivering and coordinating  awareness courses and sessions to young people on smoking, sexual health, drugs and alcohol. Providing access and coordinating activities for 50+ age groups

   

Rurality

Yes The team assist in the production of  Rural Voice newsletter  tailored to the needs of rural groups. The newsletter is produced by Carlisle City Council but includes contributions from a range of other organisations active in rural Carlisle, in particular the Carlisle Parish Councils Association. It is hoped that through Rural Voice we can help to unravel and de-mystify the complex programmes happening at a local, regional and national level and highlight what it means for rural Carlisle.
