In all cases, where possible, please provide the following information:

  • Name, address and telephone number of the person reporting the vehicle
  • Colour, make, model and registration number
  • Description of the location of the vehicle
  • Condition of vehicle
  • Road tax expiry date
  • Length of time at location

Untaxed vehicles on the public highway can also be reported to the DVLA hot line by telephone on 08000 325202.

How the Council responds to reports

Initially, we will endeavour to carry out an inspection of the vehicle within 24 hours of it being reported. It is also our intention where possible to remove abandoned vehicles within 72 hours of being reported.

When we are assessing whether the vehicle is abandoned, we will take into consideration if it is taxed, the condition of the vehicle, current keeper details, length of time at the location and any other relevant information that is available.

We check with the Police to find out whether they have any interest in the vehicle. Those of interest to the police are not generally treated as abandoned by Carlisle City Council. We can also remove vehicles from private land if they can be picked up without difficulty and the land owner does not object.

What to do if your car has been moved

You can get your car back if it has not been destroyed but only if you pay Carlisle City Council's statutory charges and provide evidence that you are the owner. If your car was stolen and we have moved it your insurance company will normally pay the costs.
