Pollution control - light pollution

light

The City Council has a statutory duty to investigate light nuisances caused by intrusive lighting from security and floodlighting sources.

There are simple steps that can be taken to prevent security lighting from causing a problem to your neighbours. These include:

  • Ensuring security lights are correctly angled. Its is recommended that the beam angle of a light should be below 70O degrees
  • Waste upward light can be prevented by the use of shields or baffles
  • Prevent light spillage by choosing lighting which provides just enough light. A 150W lamp is adequate for security purposes
  • For a light which is on all night e.g. porch light, a 9 watt light is often adequate and prevents complaints of lighting glare
  • It is always a good idea to talk to your neighbour once lighting is installed and check they are not experiencing any lighting/glare problems.

What to do if you are experiencing problems

If you are experiencing problems, try and talk to your neighbours and explain the problems their  security lighting is having on you and your property.
