Green Travel Plans

What is a Green Travel Plan?

A Green Travel Plan is a way of managing how people travel to a particular area or organisation. It may consist of a single initiative, such as encouraging car sharing or use a co-ordinated package of measures to encourage more sustainable ways of travelling.

The overall purpose of a Green Travel Plan is to reduce the demand for travel by managing the use of vehicles and making journeys more efficient.

A Green Travel Plan can incorporate:

• staff travel to and from the workplace

• business travel

• travel by visitors, contractors and deliveries

• vehicle fleets

A Green Travel Plan will usually involve initiatives to reduce the number of people who drive alone. These can include:

• promoting the use public transport

• providing facilities to enable more staff to walk and cycle

• promoting vehicle sharing

• introducing alternative work practices such as working from home
