Recovering your vehicle

You can get your car back if it has not been destroyed but only if you pay Carlisle City Council's statutory charges and provide evidence that you are the owner.

If your car was stolen and we have moved it your insurance company will normally pay the costs.

You can contact us by telephone on 01228 817200.

Vehicle reclaim fees

Abandoned vehicles have a release fee of £105.  After 24 hours of the uplift there is also a £12 per day storage charge added to the release fee for each vehicle.

Untaxed vehicles have the following release fees for each vehicle:

Release Fee Surety Fee (if a valid tax disk is not produced)
Within 24 hours £100
  • £160 for light passenger vehicles, light goods and motorcycles.
  • £330 for buses, recovery, haulage and goods vehicles.
  • £700 for exceptional loads and goods vehicles such as a heavy goods lorry or a bus.
After 24 hours £200
Storage £21 per day Applies 24 hours after the vehicle is removed and until the vehicle is released

If you pay a surety fee you can get this refunded if you bring a valid tax disc to the Civic Centre within 14 days of the being released.

When you pay to have the vehicle released, you need to provide the Registration Certificate (V5C) and proof of identity such as your photo card driving licence or passport and a recent utility bill.

If you cannot produce the V5C you must also provide documentation linking you to the vehicle such as a bill of sale, a valid insurance document or an MOT certificate. We will provide you with an ‘Application for a registration certificate’ (V62).  You must fill this in and pay a fee of £25 by cheque or postal order.
