Cutting carbon and energy
Carlisle City Council are encouraging staff, suppliers and
customers to join in and do their bit to help reduce carbon
emissions and save energy.
Here are some handy links to get you started.
Householders
A new Cumbria and Lancashire Energy Saving Trust Advice Centre
(ESTAC) has been set up to replace the Cumbria Energy
Efficiency Advice Centre with the purpose of giving householders
advice and support. Contact the ESTAC on their freephone
number 0800 512012 which is a free and impartial advice
line for residents wishing to find out about energy efficiency and
what you can do.
You can also visit the Energy Saving Trust
website (external link) for more information.
If you are a householder discover your carbon footprint by
using the Energy
Saving Trust's carbon cutter calculator (external
link).
Completing the carbon cutter will also provide you with a
personalised energy saving action plan to help you reduce it.
For those who don't have time to complete the carbon cutter you
can use the energy
saving checklist (external link). All you need to do is
tick the measures that you would like to take and you can see how
much carbon and money you could save.
Businesses
There are a number of organisations in place to support
businesses with reducing carbon emissions and energy
usage.
The Carbon Trust provide free carbon
surveys (external link) to organisations with annual
energy bills of more than £50,000.
Cumbria Business Environment Network offer advice on resource
efficiency and energy savings to local small and medium sized
enterprises. The CBEN Award scheme is there to help
organisations implement an environmental management system.
The awards are based on internationally-recognised standards and
each business undergoes a 'surveillance' visit that assesses how
they are continually striving to improve.
Carlisle City Council achieved the CBEN Gold Award in 2008.
