A stray is any dog that is unaccompanied by its owner, or a person representing them, in a public place, or in a private place in which it should not be (such as on somebody else’s property).

  • Otherwise, dogs are to be taken to the Animal Refuge at Wetheral;
  • Within 7 days the dog may be reclaimed after paying any due charges See below).
  • After 7 days the dog will be placed for rehoming or humanely destroyed.

Responsible Dog Ownership

A responsible dog owner will do everything they can to keep their pet and others safe.

When a dog is in any public place, it must wear a collar with a tag or badge giving the name and address of its owner. If your dog is wearing a collar with identification there is more chance of it being returned to you safely.

You can also use a microchip or tattoo to permanently identify their pet. Please remember though, microchips and tattoos do not replace the need for your dog to have a collar and tag.
