Dog fouling
Tackling dog fouling is one of the biggest
concerns amongst our residents.
How to report it?
You can report people who don’t clean up after
their dog, confidentially, at mailto:environmentalhealth@carlisle.gov.uk
or by telephone on 01228 817200. We will respond
within two working days and investigate each
complaint.
Why is it important?
Dog fouling is the most offensive type of litter
on our street. If people tread in it and walk it into their home,
it becomes a health risk. Diseases found in dog faeces can easily
be transmitted to children and can cause blindness.
It is a criminal offence not to clean up your
dog and you can be fined £80. We will reduce this to £60 if you pay
within 7 days. Failure to pay the fixed penalty notice within 14
days may lead to prosecution. This may result in
- a fine up to £1,000
- getting a criminal record
- having to pay court costs.
How we deal with dog fouling
We treat dog fouling as a high priority. We have
a team who patrol the streets, educate people about responsible dog
ownership and, if required, enforce the law. We provide over 1,000
litter bins where you can dispose of your bagged dog waste.
Responsible dog owners
We want all dog owners to be responsible and
clean up after their dog:
- Be prepared and take enough bags with you
- Make sure you clean up after your dog
- Put the bagged waste in any litter bin or take
it home with you
We also operate a Neighbourhood Dog Watch Scheme
