What to recycle R-Z

Rubber and elastic

Non-recyclable waste, includes elastic bands, erasers, hair ties, rubber gloves and bicycle tyres, should be disposed of in your household bin.

Sewing machines & accessories

Sewing Machines, Sewing Accessories, Scissors, Tape Measures, Needles, Thread etc, are accepted by Tools for Self Reliance. Please call 01228 529369 for further details.

Shoes

Some charity shops accept them or they can be taken to the recycling points at Asda Superstore and the Household Waste Recycling Centre.

Spectacles

Most opticians will accept old spectacles for repair and shipment to Third World countries.

Telephone directories

Can be recycled using the paper banks at the Household Waste Recycling Centre, one of our recycling points or in your Greenbox if it is available in your area.

Tetra Paks

You can now recycle your Tetra-pak cartons at the following sites: Asda, Tesco, Morrisons, and Cumbria County Council's Household Waste Recycling Centre, Bowsteads Grassing, Carlisle. Please wash and squash where possible! Sorry, no plastics can be recycled in these banks.

Tights

By cutting up your old tights you can use them to attach your plants to stakes in the garden.

Tissue

Handkerchiefs can be used, washed and reused endlessly in place of tissues.

Tissues should be composted or disposed of in the household bin.

Tools

Tools for Self-Reliance collect and refurbish hand tools (except gardening tools), for free shipment to under-developed countries. You can deliver the tools or they can be collected if necessary. Call Tools for Self-Reliance on 01228 529369 for further details.

Toys & Games

Local hospitals are always happy to receive toys and games in good condition. Please contact the Children's ward at the Cumberland Infirmary on 01228 523444.

The WRVS, Gallipoli Block, The Castle, Carlisle will also accept toys and games, particularly for their Christmas Appeal each year. WRVS can be contacted on 01228 524508. Most charity shops will also accept them.

Tyres

Over 38 million tyres are discarded in the UK each year and can sometimes occur as fly tipping on garage forecourts, industrial estates or car parks.

As garages are responsible for disposal and recycling of waste they create, you should get your tyres changed at garages rather than replace your own. Some garages send tyres for recycling.

Video Tapes

Unwanted video tapes can be taken to your nearest charity shop.

White Goods

Wood can be taken to Household Waste Recycling Centre, Bowsteads Grassing

Have their own recycling service - see inside the directory or you can place in the paper banks at one of our recycling points.

Xmas Cards

Recycle your Christmas Cards in your Greenbox or at your local recycling points or give to the Woodland Trust at Tesco and WHSmith.

Xmas Trees

Please put a real Christmas tree in or beside your Garden Waste bin if you have one or take to a Household Waste Recycling Centre for recycling.

Zero Waste

This may not be possible, but we would like residents to recycle as much of their waste as possible - over half the contents of your household bin can be recycled.
