Sustainability
Sustainable development is an approach to
resource use that aims to meet human needs while preserving the
environment, so that these needs can be met in the future as well
as the present. The term was first used by the United Nations which
defined sustainable development as “development that meets the
needs of the present without compromising the ability of future
generations to meet their own needs."
The City Council and Sustainability
Our Environmental Policy was drawn up and signed by the Chief
Executive and Leader of the Council in August 2006. The Policy
Statement was revised in January 2011, and outlines what steps we
are taking in respect of managing the environmental impacts of our
organisation, with the aim of improving our 'in house'
environmental performance, and sustainability credentials.
- Carlisle City Council’s Environmental Policy (see downloads
section).
In accordance with the Environmental Policy, we have been
developing and monitoring initiatives to improve the City Council’s
environmental performance.

The City Council received a “Gold Award” for its environmental
practices from Cumbria
Business Environment Network (external link) in 2008,
and this has since been retained.
The awards are based on internationally recognised standards and
each business undergoes a 'surveillance' visit that assesses how
they are striving to improve their environmental performance.
