New Carlisle Fairtrade website
A website dedicated to Fairtrade news and information in
Carlisle has been launched. The website also
has leaflets and registration forms about becoming a Fairtrade
outlet.
Successful Fairtrade Business Conference
As part of national Fairtrade Fortnight in February, Carlisle
hosted Cumbria’s first ever Fairtrade Conference for businesses.
The Conference was specifically designed around Cumbria’s
businesses so that they could consider ethical trading and
introduce Fairtrade products and practices into their business
operations.
The Fairtrade Foundation’s patron, George Alagiah, presenter of
BBC news and BBC World was the Conference’s keynote
speaker
The main panel included the following:
- Councillor Jacquelyne Geddes – the Mayor of Carlisle and
Conference Chair and Carlisle City Council’s Fairtrade
Champion
- Joe Human – Cumbria Fairtrade Network
- Julia Clark –Tate & Lyle, Marketing Manager
- A Fairtrade Producer

Launch of Fairtrade City Directory
On Monday 26th January 2009 a celebration event was held for
Carlisle’s shops, cafes, restaurants and guesthouses and many more
organisations and groups that support Fairtrade.
The Mayor of Carlisle, Councillor Jacquelyne Geddes presented
official certificates to representatives of 30 organisations, as an
official endorsement of their contribution to Carlisle’s status as
a Fairtrade City. More details about

This event was also the launch of the Carlisle
Fairtrade City Directory which is a comprehensive list of
organisations from small independent retailers to national high
street companies, all showing a commitment to Fairtrade and a
different way of trading and shopping.
In the Winter Edition of Carlisle Focus we asked you to send us
Fairtrade recipes which would be entered into a free prize draw.
The prize was a Fairtrade hamper donated by the Carlisle One
World Shop.
The winner was Mrs Armstrong with her Gingerbread
recipe.
