Landlord and Property Accreditation Scheme

In 1998, Carlisle City Council launched a property accreditation scheme for landlords operating in its area, the scheme mainly focused on the standards associated with student accommodation within the city.

The previous scheme has now been reviewed following a period of consultation and a new accreditation scheme for landlord’s launched on Monday 12th October 2009, at the Landlord Open Day 2009.

The new scheme takes into consideration the changes that have taken place in the private rented sector over the last 10 years, taking into account the housing needs of everyone in the community. As a council, we recognize the important role of the private rented sector in providing accommodation for a diverse range of households, and we are seeking to work with residential landlords.

In order to do this, the council will be looking to strengthen its role within Housing Services by:

  • offering landlords information that helps them to manage their properties efficiently
  • arranging meetings or forums where landlords can exchange views with Local Authority officers
  • setting up a revised voluntary accreditation schemes that recognizes and rewards landlords who manage their properties to a good standard.

What is accreditation?

Accreditation is a Code of Standards relating to the management of a property, or the physical condition of the rented accommodation. Landlords who join a scheme and abide by the standards are "accredited". Accreditation schemes are voluntary, and there is no compulsion for landlords to join - but there are advantages.

Carlisle City Council's Landlord Accreditation Scheme recognizes and rewards landlords who manage their properties to a good standard. We are working with local landlords and letting agencies to continuously develop standards that relates to homes, landlords and the management service provided by them. Landlords who join the scheme and follow the Code of Standards will be accredited by Carlisle City Council

Please note all landlords wishing to register their accommodation with The University of Cumbria, will be required to make an application to Carlisle City Council for Landlord Accreditation. Previous property accreditation certification will no longer stand from 12th October 2009. Applications to join the scheme are available from Housing Services.
