Living in Carlisle
Carlisle offers one of the most compact, level and visitor
friendly city centres in the country. From boutique chic to
familiar high-street havens, you will find it all in the award
winning The Lanes shopping centre and the pedestrianised main high
street.
Visit the award-winning Market Hall, which is now one of the few
remaining covered Victorian Markets in the country. The regular
city centre Farmer’s market has a huge variety of food from around
the region, and the annual food fair and continental market bring
in specialist produce from far and near.
Carlisle caters for every gastronomic taste and pocket, from
pavement cafes, to the finest international cuisine, from pub meals
to five course candlelit dinners - it’s all on offer.
The Sands Centre is Cumbria’s premier live arts venue hosting
classical, pop and rock music plus theatre, drama and ballet
productions from all over the world. You can also joy recitals at
the Cathedral or dramatic productions at the Green Room and Stanwix
Arts Theatre. There is a multi-screen cinema showing a huge range
of films, or experience the thrill of Laserquest and ten-pin
bowling for the more energetic.
A 2000 year old city steeped in culture set in breathtaking
countryside with inspiring views. To the north is Hadrian's Wall, a
World Heritage Site that attracts thousands of visitors every year.
Just over the border are the Scottish towns of Gretna and Dumfries.
East are the wild Pennine moors and the picturesque villages of the
Eden Valley. The stunning landscapes of the Lake District beckon
south; while westwards the Victorian seaside town of Silloth and
the beautiful Solway Coast are attractions not to be
missed.
