Not About Heroes
This April, we’re bringing the Lecture Theatre to life with a powerful performance of an award-winning play inspired by the two greatest World War I British poets. Not About Heroes is a moving and revealing portrait of two men brought together by their hatred of war and their love of poetry: Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon. Beginning with their awkward first encounter at the Craiglockhart Hospital for Nervous Disorders, Not About Heroes charts the growth of an intense relationship between the confident, upper-class Sassoon and the stuttering, provincial Owen. Already an established poet, Sassoon initially dismisses the younger man, yet is soon to both recognise and nurture his extraordinary talent. Weaving dialogue from their letters with their celebrated poetry, Stephen MacDonald’s play elegantly pieces together the mysteries of this most unlikely friendship.
