Forest and woodland management
The City Council owns and manages a number of woodlands that are
open to the public. Kingmoor Nature
Reserve is an ancient woodland site that is reputed to be
Britain’s oldest wildlife sanctuary.
Knowefield Wood and Hadrian’s Wood are both on the site of a former
plant nursery and contain many examples of exotic tree species.
The Forestry
Commission look after the forests in the north-east of Carlisle
district, which form part of the huge Kielder Forest reserve. Their
website contains details of walking, cycling and horse-riding
trails and many other visitor attractions within the forest.
The Woodland
Trust own Milton Rigg Wood near Brampton (easy access for all)
and 5 other woodlands open for visitors in the Carlisle
district.
For advice on managing private woodland, tree planting grants or
