Friends of Hammonds Pond

Around 1995 a group of local people banded together to lobby
Carlisle City Council to improve and invest in Hammonds Pond.
Once faced with strong local feelings the council, along with a
number of local groups put together a plan for regeneration of the
park. Funding was sought to carry out the regeneration work and a
substantial award from the Heritage Lottery Fund matched by council
money turned Hammonds around.
Since that time the ‘Friends of Hammonds Pond’ have developed
into a very pro-active group of people who put on a wide range of
community events throughout the year. For example : Easter Treasure
Trail, OAP’s tea party, Teddy Bears Picnic, Bulb Planting, Bird Box
Building, Lantern making and the annual Halloween party.

All these events are arranged by ‘The Friends’ for the
community, and have been very well supported by the Police,
Neighbourhood Forums, local stores, companies and many other
organisations.
The group does not set out to make profit but just to cover
costs. However if surplus money is generated we support a selected
charity each year, Air Ambulance, Eden Valley Hospice and this year
the Knox Wood Animal Refuge.
The Friends are now made up from local residents of all ages,
park wardens, police and PCSO’s, local councillors and council
officers and welcome anyone to join them bringing support and new
ideas for the future.
