Woodland Planting
Scheme
Great News! All the trees are now in with 11,000 having
been planted since last year.
Over 250 people have been involved with the tree planting scheme
at Talkin Tarn. Fifty members of the public came and helped on
Sunday, 20 March 2011 and since then we have had groups from Castle
Carrock & Talkin girl guides, The Gilford Centre, Newton Rigg
College, Caldew School, Crosby on Eden Primary School, Brampton
Nursery School and The Probation Service community payback
teams. 1st Cumberland boy scouts, Castle Carrock Primary
School, Garden Linx and Cumwhinton Primary school all came to lend
a hand. Thank you to everyone.
Trees are important for human existence, as well as being
attractive and important features in our towns and countryside.
They are also great places for us to visit and enjoy. Trees,
woodlands and hedgerows also provide vitally important places for
wild plants and animals to live and shelter.
For children, native wild trees are a useful educational
resource and an interesting lesson in how nature provides us with
many materials needed for modern life including food, fuel, timber
and paper. Planting a tree is also a great life experience and
something which everyone should have the chance to do at least
once!
Feel free to have a walk through the new wood.
