Kingstown Wildlife Pond
Given to Carlisle City Council during the development of the
Kingstown Industrial Estate. Kingstown Wildlife Pond is an oasis of
peace and tranquility nestled in amongst the houses and the
industrious north of the City.
Habitat and Wildlife
Kingstown Pond is a
fantastic haven for many different species of wildlife. At the
edges of the Pond you will find many interesting plants, offering a
variety of colour throughout the growing season. Yellow flag iris,
water mint, spearwort, reed mace and rushes to name but a few.
There is also a wide range of plants growing in the pond providing
food for the numerous insect species that live underwater for part
of their life cycle. Some of these insects will emerge from the
pond as flying insects during the summer months. The damselflies,
dragonflies and mayflies, as well as the mosquitoes and midges.
This underwater world is a breeding ground for frogs,
toads and newts, and a year round home for water scorpions, pond
snails and of course the carnivorous great diving beetles which can
be as big as a 50p coin.
