Bags of Help initiative

A park in Carlisle is in the running for a Tesco’s Bags of Help funding award.

Chance's Park play area, Wigton Road, Carlisle is part of Tesco’s Bags of Help initiative and could receive some funding to help make improvements to the site.

Tesco has teamed up with Groundwork to launch its Bags of Help initiative across England and Wales. The scheme will see three community groups and projects awarded grants of £12,000, £10,000 and £8,000 – all raised from the 5p bag charge.

Bags of Help offers community groups and projects in each of Tesco’s 390 regions across the UK a share of revenue generated from the 5p charge levied on single-use carrier bags.

The public can vote in store between 27 February and 6 March on who should receive the £12,000, £10,000 and £8,000 awards.

Deputy Leader of Carlisle City Council, Cllr Elsie Martlew, said:

“This is great news for Chance’s Park. The funding will help make improvements to the play area and will provide exciting and challenging play opportunities for local children.  The Friends of Chance’s Park have highlighted the need for the play area to be upgraded and following confirmation of the grant to be received, we will consult with user groups.  All would welcome investment in the infants section of the play area  to offer new, safe and inviting facilities. I’d urge local residents to visit their local Tesco’s store and vote for Chance’s Park.”

If this project is successful in gaining a grant Carlisle City Council will work closely with the local communities and users of Morton Community Centre to hold a specific consultation, aimed at selecting the children's and parents preferred item of play equipment to fit the budget and site.
