A Big Tidy Up is now underway in Stanwix, Carlisle and this year, will include a community Clean for The Queen event on Saturday, 5 March.

Clean for The Queen is a campaign launched by Country Life magazine in partnership with Keep Britain Tidy to clear up Britain in time for The Queen’s 90th birthday in 2016. The national clean-up weekend will be held between 4 - 6 March.

In Carlisle, a litter-pick event will form part of a wider Big Tidy Up initiative in Stanwix, organised between Monday, 29 February and Saturday, 5 March.

A wide range of community groups and local volunteers have signed up to take part in a Stanwix Big Tidy Up. These include the Friends of Rickerby Park, Stanwix Community Centre, University of Cumbria students, Carlisle Youth Zone, St Michael’s Church and St Mark’s Church, the local Guides group and the Reivers District Scouts group.

Local residents are also being asked to lend a hand by taking part in the community Clean for The Queen litter-pick. This will be held on Saturday, 5 March. Anyone that wants to take part should meet at Stanwix Community Association Centre, Church Street, Stanwix at 10am. Refreshments will be provided. All litter-picking equipment will be supplied by the City Council.

Cllr Elizabeth Mallinson, Ward Councillor for Stanwix Urban, said:

"The week-long Big Tidy Up event has already attracted lots of support and a wide range of groups have pledged to take part. This is great news for the community and will have a lasting effect on the local environment. I hope the community supports the Clean for The Queen on Saturday and comes out in force.”

Stanwix Primary schoolchildren have showed their support by taking part in a poster competition which was judged by the Mayor of Carlisle, Cllr Steve Layden on Tuesday 23 February.

He will present prizes to the winning school pupils at Stanwix Primary School on Friday, 4 March at 9am. The winning poster is being used to publicise the event.

Stanwix Primary School will also be taking part in their own litter picks around St Michael’s churchyard, the Glebe and Clark’s Field between Monday 29 February and Friday 4 March.
