Keep it clean

Stanwix residents are being urged to support a week-long Big Tidy Up campaign.

Between Monday 6 and Saturday, 11 March, Carlisle City Council and partners, are planning a comprehensive clean-up of the Stanwix area and are asking the local community to lend a hand.

Volunteers who want to take an active part are being asked to take part in a litter-pick. This will be held on Saturday, 11 March. Anyone that wants to take part should meet at Stanwix Community Association Centre, Church Street, Stanwix at 10am. Refreshments will be provided. All litter-picking equipment will be supplied by the City Council.

Local community groups and schools have also been approached to see if they can lend their support. Stanwix Primary schoolchildren have shown their support by taking part in a poster competition.

Carlisle City Cllr Paul Nedved, Ward Councillor for Stanwix Urban, said:

"This is the seventh year a Big Tidy Up has been held in Stanwix. It is a spring centrepiece in our community effort to assist in combatting the twin blights of litter and dog fouling with the support of residents, community groups and the City Council. We have been well supported in recent years from all age groups taking part, resulting in numerous bags of litter being collected."

Following on from the national success of Clean for the Queen in 2016, Stanwix Big Tidy will be joining forces with the Big Tidy Up in their national "The Great British Spring Clean" in March. The campaign aims to inspire more people from community and voluntary groups, clubs, businesses across the country to get active and help clean up their neighbourhood.

Stanwix won the best urban community award in Cumbria in Bloom (pride in your community) in 2016. Community participation and environmental responsibility were key parts of the campaign.
