Green-fingered Stanwix residents are being asked to ‘make a difference’ this Saturday (8 July) by joining forces with the Friends of Rickerby Park volunteers.
As part of the build up to the Stanwix in Bloom judging on Wednesday 12 July, residents are being asked to lend a hand by taking part in a Friends of Rickerby Park Make a Difference day, starting at 10am. Anyone willing to take part in a litter pick and general clear up of the area, is asked to meet in Eden Bridge Gardens.
Stanwix has entered the Urban Community category of Cumbria in Bloom after previously winning the category in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2016. A wide range of organisations are giving their support to this year’s entry, including the Friends of Rickerby Park, Stanwix Primary School, Barn Close Residential Home and Stanwix Playgroup. Residents of all ages have been lending a hand.
The Stanwix in Bloom committee is asking residents to join in too. To coincide with the judging, households around the Church Street and Scotland Road area, are being asked to ensure their gardens are blooming marvellous. Leaflets have been distributed to homes within the area urging them to take ‘pride in your community’.
Cllr Paul Nedved, Stanwix Urban ward councillor and Stanwix in Bloom committee member, said:
“Following this year’s theme - Greening Grey Britain for Wildlife - local residents and in particular, local children, have been helping turn areas into vibrant and beautiful urban spaces. We now need the support of residents and businesses. The Make a Difference day is one way to lend support. Come along and help us Keep Carlisle Clean.”
In addition to local community support, funding has also been received from Carlisle City Council. This has contributed towards hanging baskets and other floral displays.
