National Empty Homes Week

National Empty Homes Week

To coincide with National Empty Home Week (30 November - 4 December), Carlisle City Council is offering support and advice to local homeowners who have empty properties.

As of October 2015, out of a total housing stock of 50,891 there are 1,120 homes in Carlisle (2.2%) registered as empty, a decrease of 49 on 2014. There are 188 (0.37%) homes that have been registered empty for more than two years, a decrease of 22 on 2014.

In addition to being a disincentive to anyone staying on or moving to an area, they are also visually unattractive and create an impression of neglect and decline.

A Carlisle and Cumbria Empty Homes event has been organised by Carlisle City Council for local owners of empty properties and is fully subscribed. Invitations to the event have been sent and around 50 property owners from Carlisle are attending. Held at the Civic Centre on Friday, 4 December, it will include key speakers including the Chief Executive of the Empty Homes Agency, Helen Williams.

As part of the City Council’s Empty Homes Strategy, the Private Sector Housing Team aims to reduce the level of empty properties in Carlisle and help meet local housing need by introducing accommodation back into the market. The team:

  • Respond to enquiries and complaints from local residents about empty properties.
  • Proactively identify empty properties and their owners.
  • Provide advice and support to the owners of empty properties with the aim of returning the properties back into use.

There will be a display stand in the reception area of the Carlisle City Council’s Civic Centre between Monday 30 November and Friday 4 December. Visitors are encouraged to read more about what the Council is doing to address empty homes.

For further details on empty properties, or to report an empty property, telephone 01228 817352, email [email protected] or visit www.carlisle.gov.uk
