Neat Streets

A ‘Neat Streets’ campaign is underway in Carlisle.

The new Carlisle City Council initiative is targeting back lanes and aims to get them free of fly tipping and litter. An extensive clean up has been organised by the council and all items within the back lanes will be removed.

Letters have been hand delivered to residents whose properties are connected to the back lanes. They are being asked to support the campaign by keeping the lanes clear of dumped items and pass on any information that allows the City Council to prosecute those who fly tip and litter.

The scheme is being piloted in some back lanes in St Aidan’s ward – Linton Street, Sybil Street, Alexander Street and Brook Street. If the initiative proves to be a success, it may be extended to other areas within Carlisle.

Cllr Elsie Martlew, Deputy Leader of Carlisle City Council, said:

“We want to keep Carlisle clean and tackle issues such as fly tipping and littering. The Neat Streets campaign is one way of working with communities to keep back lanes and other communal spaces free of rubbish. We want the back lanes to be cleaner and safer places for residents. By freeing up the space, the back lanes can be reclaimed as communal spaces for communities to use.

“However we need the support of residents to ensure that the problem doesn’t continue. We also need information to allow us to prosecute those who continue to dump unwanted items.”

If you’d like to report problem areas or have any information that will help us to target our dog fouling patrols or prosecute those who fly tip or litter, please email [email protected] or call us on 01228 817559.

Please provide as much detail as possible:

  • Where the fouling/littering/fly tipping is?
  • What time of day it is happening (dog fouling)?
  • Who is responsible?

Any information you provide us with will be treated in the strictest confidence.
