Play area revamp

A newly refurbished play area in Milbourne Street, Carlisle will be officially re-opened on Tuesday 15 March.

Work has recently been completed on the £35,000 play area revamp. The work lasted around six weeks and refurbished and replaced existing children’s play area.

The existing equipment was removed and replaced by brand-new play equipment, chosen after consultation with the local community. Pupils from Robert Ferguson Primary School (The School Council, two classes from Year 1 and two classes from Year 4) were consulted during an afternoon session spent at the school.

Denton Holme Community Association Environmental Group was also consulted on the proposals to upgrade the play area. Ward councillors gave their support to the development of the exciting project that will provide modern play facilities for local youngsters.

Equipment includes a climbing unit with slide, seesaw, roundabout and a basket swing, which is accessible to less-able children.

Work started on Wednesday 27 January with the removal of the old equipment and the refurbished play area re-opened on Monday 7 March.

The work’s costs were met from a Landfill Tax grant of £25,000 from Cumbria Waste Management Environment Trust and £2,500 from Cumbria County Council with the balance from Carlisle City Council’s Play Areas budget.

After a competitive tendering process the chosen supplier was Kompan Scotland Ltd.

Cllr Elsie Martlew, Deputy Leader of Carlisle City Council, said:

“We’d like to thank everyone involved in putting this scheme together. Our Green Spaces team have worked in partnership with funding partners, ward councillors and the community to deliver this new play area. The views of the local residents determined what equipment was installed. More investment is planned for other play areas within the city.”
