A community Clean for The Queen event will be held in Stanwix on Saturday, 5 March.

Clean for The Queen is a campaign launched by Country Life magazine in partnership with Keep Britain Tidy to clear up Britain in time for The Queen’s 90th birthday in 2016. The national clean-up weekend will be held between 4 - 6 March.

In Carlisle, a litter-pick event will form part of a wider Big Tidy Up initiative in Stanwix, organised between Monday, 29 February and Saturday, 5 March. A wider range of community groups and local volunteers have signed up to support the event, including Carlisle City Council’s waste and green spaces teams.

Local residents are also being asked to lend a hand by taking part in the community Clean for The Queen litter-pick. This will be held on Saturday, 5 March. Anyone that wants to take part should meet at Stanwix Community Association Centre, Church Street, Stanwix at 10am. Refreshments will be provided. All litter-picking equipment will be supplied by the City Council.

Cllr Paul Nedved, Ward Councillor for Stanwix Urban, said:

“Everyone has a responsibility to keep their community tidy and the Clean for The Queen campaign provides us with a great chance to improve the quality of our streets and public spaces. Our Stanwix event will include a community litter pick and we’d like to thank all the groups and individuals who have already pledged their support.”

Stanwix Primary schoolchildren are showing their support by taking part in a poster competition which was judged by the Mayor of Carlisle, Cllr Steve Layden. He will judge the posters on Tuesday 23 February at 2pm at the Civic Centre.

He will present prizes to the winning school pupils at Stanwix Primary School on Friday, 4 March at 9am. The winning poster will be used to publicise the event.

Stanwix Primary School will also be taking part in their own litter picks around St Michael’s churchyard, the Glebe and Clark’s Field between Monday 29 February and Friday 4 March.
