Urban Design and Public Realm
Our Urban Design Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) was
adopted by the Council on Tuesday, 14 July 2009.
It sets out a blueprint for how key parts of the city could be
developed. Four "city squares" are suggested:
- Court Square
- Market Square
- Rickergate Square; and
- a new square at Caldew Riverside (Viaduct Estate)
Plans are also proposed for the Caldewgate, Shaddongate area and
Botchergate South areas.
The document includes guidance and principles on how buildings
should be designed throughout the city centre. It suggests how the
city’s public spaces can be improved including paving materials,
seating and lighting.
The Urban Design Guide and Public Realm Framework (below) is
intended as a handbook for developers, architects and
designers.
