Involvement and achievements
The group has consulted to improve the access of disabled
persons to buildings and other facilities including access to
information within the district of Carlisle.
Ongoing involvement with
- inconsiderate parking such as blocking footpaths
or across dropped kerbs
- bikes on footpaths
- local public transport
- provision of "Changing Places"
Examples of consultations we were involved in include
- Carlisle Medical Group Proposal (Hilltop Heights) which
did not go ahead
- parking charges at The Lanes car park
- moving the Post Office within WH Smith (this was
not thought of as a successful outcome)
- Choice Based Lettings Policy
- objected to time restrictions on Nowcards (positive
outcome)
- Tullie House (Jura Consultants asked the group about
access issues)
- Castle Street, Carlisle
- Flood Alleviation Scheme (access to Bitts Park and parking
layouts)
- review of the Polling Stations
- NHS Foundation Trust Single Equality Scheme
- Urban Design Guide and Public Realm Framework
- Road Traffic Orders and Parking Issues (with mixed
successes)
- libraries
- Talking Tarn
- Rickerby Park
Some of the group's achievements include
- The Lanes toilet and parking facilities to be kept open when
there is a late event in the City. An example of this was the
Christmas Lights switch-on.
- Free bus travel from Stagecoach and Reays for Mencap workers
while supporting individuals. Previously individuals receiving
support with a Carlisle bus pass had to pay for their support
workers travel despite getting a free bus pass due to their
personal circumstances.
- Argos has carried out works to the frontage of their shop in
Carlisle which now provides level entry.
- The group was regional winner of the BT Countryside for All
award in 1997 for involvement in the design of Kingmoor Reserve
Nature Trail.
- Replacement of inaccessible dropped kerbs and installation of
new ones.
