Development and Flood Risk
Residents and businesses within Carlisle District are aware the
risk of flooding within the district. Proposals for development
within areas at risk of flooding will require detailed flood risk
assessments undertaken prior to planning applications being
submitted.
PPS25: Development and Flood Risk was issued by the Department
of Communities and Local Government in December 2006. This updated
planning policy statement provides information on flood zones and
flood risk vulnerability as well as on the role of the local
planning authority and the Environment Agency.
The Environment
Agency provides detailed information on the risk of
flooding.
The Council has undertaken a Strategic Flood Risk Assessment
during the preparation of its Local
Plan. This sets out areas prone to river flooding and indicates
Flood Zones. This will be updated to take account of other flooding
issues such as from drainage. This is available to purchase from
Planning and Housing Services.
Land liable to flood is shown on the Local Plan Proposals Map.
However, this is only a snapshot in time as a general guide. More
up-to-date information is held by the environment agency and should
be regarded as the definitive source for information on flood
risk.
