Litter and Litter bins
Our Area Maintenance Teams provide a street cleaning service for
the removal of street litter, leaf fall and debris.
Refuse placed out on the street for collection is the
responsibility of the resident until it is collected. Any
spillage’s from refuse bags or recycling bins which hasn’t been
presented properly should be cleaned up be the resident.
Chewing gum
The ‘Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act’ defines gum as
litter. It is an offence to drop litter on all land in the open
air, including private land, water and beaches down to the low
water mark. The penalty for littering offences is between £50 and
£80.
Litter bins
We maintain and empty approximately 900 litterbins in the city
and rural area. Most of these are emptied
weekly. Some are used more frequently, so we empty them
more often. It is an offence to place refuse from properties
or businesses waste in litterbins.
Litterbins in park areas are
maintained and emptied by the City Councils Green Spaces section.
In some rural areas the Parish Councils have their own litterbins
which are not maintained or emptied by us.
