Street cleansing

Carlisle City council sweeps roads and footpaths helping to keep the environment clean. We also provide and empty litter bins, remove graffiti from public buildings and remove fly tipping.

Our Area Maintenance teams cover all street cleaning services apart from the A69 and the motorway. The service is based on the Environmental Protection Act 1990 code of practice on litter and refuse.

  • Zone 1 shop areas are cleaned daily.
  • Zone 2 areas are set on a frequency from twice daily to weekly cleaning depending on location.
  • Zone 3 and above are cleaned as required as per the grading code.

Information on the code of practice can be found on the DEFRA Website. If you feel your street needs cleaning, please contact us.

We are not responsible for...

Schools have a responsibility to clear litter and refuse from their own grounds, but not for litter outside the grounds.

If a piece of private land is littered, the owner is responsible. The Environmental Protection Act 1990 gives us the right to take legal action to enforce land owners to clean up areas.
