New grant to enable non-profit making organisations with social housing sector experience to help tenants take an active role in how their home is managed.

The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities is inviting bids from non-profit making organisations or partnerships in England with relevant expertise in the social housing sector and an understanding of the importance of resident empowerment.

The new funding supports the Government’s social housing white paper, The Charter for Social Housing, which commits to empowering all social housing residents with the knowledge and awareness of their rights so that they can effectively engage with their landlords.

The £500,000 grant, available over a three-year period, will be awarded to one organisation or a lead organisation as part of a consortium.

The funding is intended to support social housing residents from across England with training and capacity building activities that will empower them to:

• Become more confident to engage with their landlord.
• Understand their opportunities and rights on ways to get involved.
• Take an active role in influencing how landlord services are delivered to drive delivery of higher quality services that are focused on their needs.
• Increase their knowledge and understanding of social housing and communities.
• Hold their landlord to account.
• Play a more active role in their community.
• Take control of local services.

The grant will cover the costs required to deliver a national programme of activities, including costs of staffing, supplies and services, contribution to overheads, any irrecoverable VAT, etc.

Commenting on the new grant, Minister for Rough Sleeping and Housing Eddie Hughes MP said:

“Tenants have a right for their voices to be heard - and we want to ensure they have the tools and resources to do this.”

The deadline for applications is 2 October 2022.
