Background
The Woodland Trust is a UK conservation charity dedicated to the protection of the UK’s native woodland heritage. The Trust campaigns to protect ancient woods, improve woodland biodiversity, increase native woodland cover and increase understanding and enjoyment of woods.
MOREwoods is administered by the Woodland Trust and funded by Lloyds Bank and Bank of Scotland as part of a broader commitment to plant one million trees a year over the next decade.
Objectives of Fund
MOREwoods offers financial support to farmers and landowners in the UK to help them plant more woodland on a large scale.
MOREwoods funding is designed to create new habitat for wildlife across the UK. A variety of native trees is available. The funder’s expert advisers will recommend which species are suitable for the site and planting objectives.
All trees are delivered during tree planting season. This runs from November to March across most of the UK, but can stretch into October and April in Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Where 500+ trees are planted as woodland on at least half a hectare, the Woodland Trust can help applicants design the woodland, create a bespoke species mix, supply the agreed trees and tree protection, and cover up to 75% of costs.
Value Notes
Through MOREwoods, the Woodland Trust will subsidise up to 75% of the cost of the trees, tree protection, advice and guidance provided if applicants choose to plant the trees themselves.
For those residing in England, Wales or Northern Ireland who would like a contractor to plant the trees for them, the Trust can arrange this and cover up to 60% of all costs for woodland creation over 1ha. Those planting in the Northern Forest might be eligible for an even higher subsidy rate.
Who Can Apply
MOREwoods funding is available for any landowners or farmers to plant woodlands on their land as long as eligibility criteria are met. Anyone can apply on behalf of the landowner; however, they must have the landowner’s permission. Eligible projects must plant at least 1.25 acres (0.5 hectares) of new woodland, and 1,000-1,600 trees per hectare.
The area can be made up of multiple smaller blocks of at least 0.1ha each. There is no maximum size limit, although larger projects may be advised of other grant schemes available.
Applicants are for the UK only. Applications can be from both members and non-members of the Woodland Trust.
Restrictions
MOREwoods cannot fund trees for restocking in established woodland, or planting on areas of recently felled woodland.
Any land planted through MOREwoods will not be eligible for funding under the Basic Payment Scheme and some other agricultural grants.
Location
United Kingdom
How To Apply
Applications are now being taken for planting new woodland over 0.5ha between November 2021 and March 2022.
Applications are made online. To apply, applicants will need a map of the area where they would like to plant and a grid reference for the site. This is used to check the site is eligible for funding and suitable for planting trees.
