Welcome to Art's and Culture

Whatever the new ‘normal’ is there’s never been a more poignant and exciting time for arts and culture. Like very thirsty people we’ve all been dreaming of slaking our creative thirst. There’s real positive energy just bursting to get out. Be part of these exciting times, there are already many ways to get involved (some listed below) but there’s always room for new ideas.

Chances Park is specially landscaped to offers great views of the city of Carlisle. The main entrance to Chance's Park and the community centre is off the Wigton Road (A595) where there is a free car park for visitors. There is pedestrian access off Dunmallet Rigg, Wigton Road, Dunmail Drive, Park Road and Langrigg Road.

Recreational Activities


Visitors to Chance’s Park are offered a variety of recreational features:

  • Football pitches – located within the main areas of the park
  • Mini Multi Use Games Area – all weather playing surface suitable for a range of games
  • Play Area – large and well equipped, with equipment for all ages
  • Nature Trail – a way marked route around the park with accompanying leaflets (available from the Community Centre)
  • There are flat accessable paths running throughout the park to create circular routes
  • Benches are placed throughout the park in order to rest and watch the world go by

Park Features

  • Georgian Garden – a restored and modernised interpretation of the original formal gardens which would have surrounded the Manor
  • Manor Grounds – an area of lawns and shrub beds with many historic trees, containing the original restored Ha-ha (boundary ditch/wall)
  • Hay Meadow – a long strip of grasses and some wild flowers typically found in traditional hay meadows in North Cumbria. This area is mown annually and a hay crop removed by local contractors.
  • Wider Park – Chance’s Park is characterised by rolling, open park land, complete with both mature trees and more recent plantings. The park is served by a network of high quality paths, from which the historic medieval ridge and furrow ploughing systems can be seen.

A Strategic Framework for Culture in Carlisle was initiated in 2019 by a small steering group of Carlisle City Council, Prism Arts, Tullie House Museum & Art Gallery Trust and the University of Cumbria.  The consultation was designed to not only engage existing cultural specialists but to encourage a diverse range of voices representing diversity, business, education, health, individual and freelance artists and creative practitioners to contribute to shaping the future arts and cultural agenda.
