Welcome to the rural section of the Carlisle City Council website. The purpose of these pages is to provide access to information, publications and contacts which might be useful to the rural communities of Carlisle district and organisations that work in rural Carlisle.


Rural Links

Cumbria CVS (external link) - Third Sector Cumbria is a website portal, which has been designed to provide access to information, advice and support for all Third Sector groups across Cumbria.

ACTion with Communities in Cumbria (external link) - As an independent and apolitical charity, we are well-placed to act as a bridge between communities and public bodies and as a broker to enable linkages and dialogue.

Cumbria Association for Local Councils (external link) - We are the Association of Town and Parish Councils and Parish Meetings in Cumbria Parish Councils.

Cumbria Community Foundation (external link) - Improve the quality of life for people experiencing disadvantage in Cumbria by

  • making grants to local charities
  • promoting charitable giving by organisations and individuals
  • managing grant-making funds on behalf of individuals and organisations

ACTion with Communities in Cumbria provide information on undertaking community led plans and examples of plans County wide.

ACTion with Communities in Cumbria is also compiling the Directory of Community Action Plans in Cumbria, a centralised resource enabling every Plan produced to be viewed online.

 

Local List

The Carlisle City Council is seeking to develop a Local List of non-designated local heritage assets – these would be buildings, monuments or other assets that are not currently statutorily listed on the national list of buildings of special architectural or historic interest i.e. not presently Grade I, Grade II* or Grade II listed buildings.

A Local List will help to highlight those places which local communities feel to be worthy of preserving. For the List to be relevant, it is important that local communities are engaged in the process of identifying assets throughout the City and in our rural areas. We aim to compile the Local List through a collaborative approach engaging local communities, organisations, historians and heritage officers that have a diverse knowledge of the local history and heritage of the District.

In addition to protecting local heritage resources for the future, it is hoped that this project will also provide a platform for greater place/heritage-based community involvement. Local people should be allowed to decide what is of value to them and this project will provide additional means to achieve this. The various processes involved in preparing a Local List may allow for more Local Heritage Partnerships to be formed and strengthen local identity.

An introductory meeting to be held on the 11th June 2015 will: propose for discussion an inclusive approach; review and recommend a set of criteria by which local heritage assets will be agreed; and identify the next steps.
