Remembrance Events

Events will be held in Carlisle on the build up to Armistice Day.

They are all organised by the Royal British Legion, with the support of Carlisle City Council. They are open to public and include:

Laying of Poppy Crosses on War Graves in Carlisle Cemetery (the Service will be held at the Newer War Memorial)

Date: Thursday, 5 November, starting at 10.45am

The Mayor and Mayoress of Carlisle, Cllr Steven Layden and Mrs Maureen Layden are inviting the public to join them at a short service to lay Poppy Crosses on War Graves in Carlisle Cemetery. This is the culmination of the laying of over 200 crosses ­on every War Grave in the cemetery and a total of 400 in the various cemeteries in Carlisle.

Festival of Remembrance

Date: Friday, 6 November, 7.00pm

The Royal British Legion, Carlisle and Stanwix Branch has organised a Festival of Remembrance to be held in St Cuthbert’s Church; 400 tickets are available to the public, members of the Legion and local dignitaries, free of charge on a first come, first served basis at the Old Town Hall. The evening features the Border Concert Band, Green Room Players, Norman Street School Choir, St Cuthbert’s Choir, local singer Brian James and A.C.T Youth Theatre and the Cartmell Shepherd’s Choir. There will be playlets, Poetry, solos and community singing which will culminate in a short service of remembrance and the dropping of 40,000 poppy petals.

Poppy Collection and Coffee morning in the Old Town Hall, Carlisle, run by the Women's Section of the RBL, in aid of the Poppy Appeal

Date: Saturday, 7 November, 10am to 12noon

The Mayor and Mayoress of Carlisle, Cllr Steven Layden and Mrs Maureen Layden will join Poppy Collectors in the street collection for the Poppy Appeal. He will also attend the Coffee morning in the Old Town Hall run by the Women's Section of the RBL in aid of the Poppy Appeal. All welcome.

Remembrance Sunday - City Memorial, City Centre (Greenmarket)

Date: Sunday, 8 November, 11am

The Mayor and Mayoress of Carlisle, Cllr Steven Layden and Mrs Maureen Layden will lead the Remembrance Day Wreath-Laying Ceremony, when the Two Minutes’ Silence will be observed, and a Wreath will be laid by the Mayor. Former servicemen and women are invited to form up at Paternoster Row at 10.30am ready to march to the War Memorial in Greenmarket for the service.  All welcome.

The County Remembrance Service - Cenotaph, Rickerby Park

Date: Sunday 8 November, 2.30pm

The Mayor and Mayoress, Cllr Steven Layden and ­Mrs Maureen Layden will join the Lord Lieutenant, High Sheriff and other dignitaries attending a Remembrance Day Wreath-Laying Ceremony, organised by the by The Royal British Legion (Cumberland and Westmorland County Branch).Wreath’s will be laid.

Young Persons’ Armistice Service at the City Memorial (Carlisle Greenmarket)

Date: Wednesday, 11 November, 11am

A Young Persons’ Remembrance Service will be held. Children are invited to lay tributes, readings and poems at the City Memorial. Young people are particularly invited to attend this event. Invited school children will meet with the Mayor of Carlisle, Cllr Steven Layden at the Tithe Barn from 10.15am and process to the City Memorial led by a Piper and the Royal British Legion Standard at 10.40am.
