Carlisle Building Control Privacy Notice 

Carlisle City Council is committed to protecting and respecting your privacy in terms of how we collect, use, store and destroy your personal information. 

We are the data controller of the personal information we will collect from you and under the General Data Protection Regulation, this fair processing notice is designed to provide you with all the information you have a right to be provided with. 

Why we collect your personal information 

We will collect the minimum amount of personal information to comply with statutory requirements or to deliver a service that you have requested. The information used will used for the following purposes. 

  • Process your Building Regulation Application 
  • Deal with the Dangerous structure 
  • Process your application for demolition consent 
  • Process you applications for street naming and numbering 
  • Deal with your general enquiry, comment or complaint. 
  • >Process applications to become a member of the shop mobility scheme. 

Your information will not be shared with any other person or organisation unless there is a legal duty to do so. Depending on the nature of the work we may need to share your personal information with these organisations in order to comply with statutory obligations: 

  • Local Fire Authorities>
  • Police Authorities 
  • Water and Sewerage Providers 
  • Cumbria County Council as licencing authority for Safety at Sports Ground Safety. 
  • Other Council Departments such as Planning, Revenue, Housing, Legal. 

Explicit consent will be requested from you if we use your information for any other reason. 

What allows us to collect your personal information? 

The data that you provide will be used to: 

  • To deliver services and support you 
  • To enable us to manage the services we provide 
  • To continually improve our service delivery, train new members of staff. 
  • To investigate any complaints you may have about our goods or services 
  • To check the quality of our goods and services and help understand customer needs 
  • To help develop and plan new services. 

There are several legal reasons why we need to collect and use your personal information. For this service: 

(i) Contract: 

you have entered into a contract with us for a service. 

(ii) Public Task: 

it is required in law: 

  • The Building Act 1984 
  • Building Regulations 2010 as amended 
  • Fees and Charges Regulations 2010. 
  • Street naming numbering: Town Improvement Clauses Act 1847, Public Health Act 1907 and Public Health Act 1925. 

What personal information we collect? 

The information that Building Control collects is dependent on the nature of the service request and or statutory requirement, information may include: 

  • Names and addresses 
  • Financial information, bank details etc 
  • Dates of birth 
  • Plans and specifications for a development 
  • Photographs 
  • Correspondence and Emails relating to a project 
  • Witness records and statements 
  • Interest in building and land 

How long we keep information about you? 

We generally keep your personal information for a minimum of 15 years, depending on the purpose for which it is processed. For full details, please view or ask us for a copy of our retention schedules.

  • To have personal information erased
