We couldn't run our walks without our volunteers. Every day they're supporting people to live happier, healthier lives through short group walks. Our volunteers do fantastic work to ensure as many people as possible enjoy and benefit from walking. Whether you're a keen walker, you're looking to start getting more active or you want to develop your skills. As a Walking for Health volunteer you will:

• Help people in your community to get active and healthy, providing vital support that they otherwise might not get, while staying active yourself.
• Get to know others and become part of a community of walkers and volunteers.
• Receive specialist training as part of a nationally recognised and well-respected programme.
• Help to organise and risk assess walk routes across our beautiful district.

Outdoor Conservation

The Carlisle Countryside Volunteer team is a group of enthusiastic volunteers who meet up every Monday to carry out practical conservation tasks in the countryside sites around Carlisle. Click here to Learn More

You can get involved in carrying out practical conservation tasks such as hay meadow management, coppicing, footpath management, pond management and boardwalk construction. It is a great chance get to meet new people, learn new skills and contribute towards the conservation of Carlisle's wildlife and green spaces.

Each work day is based at different countryside sites around the city and Talkin Tarn. When working at Talkin Tarn transport to the site is provided. All other volunteer sessions are based in and around Carlisle and all sites are within walking or cycling distance from the city centre and car parking is available.

One off Activities

Don’t have time for a recurring volunteering commit? How about volunteering to do some one off activities?

You could help out with on-going projects, such as joining our street cleaning team to litter pick within your community, or take part in one off events, such as our annual Fireshow.

If you have a specific activity in mind just let us know and we will see what we can do.

Shopmobility

Shopmobility has been helping people with mobility needs since 1994, and with your help we would like to continue to do so for years to come. We help people access the city centre facilities by giving them access to scooters and wheelchairs.

We are a small friendly team, looking for new volunteers to join us. Activities could include: general office duties; ensuring that the equipment is stored correctly; and helping with our drop off and pick up service to the city centre hotels.

We ask volunteers to commit to at least three hours per week. This can be a morning or afternoon shift either 10am - 1pm or 1pm - 4pm, Monday to Friday.

No particular skills and experience are required, however an understanding of the difficulties experienced by people with disabilities would be helpful.

Shopmobility is based on the second Level of the Lanes Car Park.

Office Work

We do as much as we can with the resources available to us, but with your help we could do so much more. Volunteering time to help us out with office work means provides us with the vital support we need behind the scenes, so that we can support the local community more effectively.

Volunteering can enhance your employment skills and strengthen your CV, helping you get on the career ladder. This is a great opportunity to gain valuable knowledge and experience in a public sector environment.

Ideally, we ask volunteers to commit to a minimum of 3 - 4 hours a week, but you can offer to volunteer as much or as little time as you can afford between 9am - 5pm, Monday to Friday.

Errands / General tasks

There are lots of errands/general tasks available, that would require different skills and levels of commitment, so there is often something available to get involved in. You could volunteer to car share with council employees to help reduce traffic and pollution, or you could help us deliver leaflets when we need to send out public notices.
