Recruitment of Casual Drivers

We are looking for drivers to join our casual pool to be able to drive a range of vehicles such as vans and tippers, mechanical sweepers and refuse collection vehicles in support of our priority services.

As well as a confident and competent driver, you will be a strong team player, committed to delivering quality services to customers and have a sound approach to managing health and safety.   Drivers are also expected to demonstrate leadership qualities as you may be responsible for the performance and safety of your crew, for example ensuring that your team works safely and delivers services to the standards we expect.  

Drivers will be expected to have a flexible approach to work and be available at short notice to cover for absences.  As team players, drivers are expected to support street cleaning, refuse and recycling collections working alongside their colleagues flexibly.

Occasional weekend working will be needed and a flexible approach to work is essential to ensure that rounds are clear each day. 

Full training, uniform and PPE will be provided.

Rates of pay:



Driving licence

Delivery vehicle driver / pavement sweeper driver

(up to 7.5 tonnes)

£17,972 - £18,319  per annum (grade C)

Minimum Category C1

driving licence and valid CPC. 


Road sweeper driver


£17,972 - £18,319  per annum (grade C)

Minimum Category C (class 2) HGV driving licence and valid CPC is required. 


Refuse collection vehicle driver (HGV)

£18,870 - £19,819  per annum (grade D)


Typical shift patterns are as follows:

Monday to Friday     07:00 – 15:00

Other shift patterns maybe available later in the day and across weekends, bank holidays and public holidays. 

The above hours are a guide only.  Staff are expected to have a flexible attitude to work and on occasion may be required to work beyond the typical finish time for example to ensure that the planned work for the day is complete or to respond to unforeseen incidents or delays.
