Monuments and Memorials

Carlisle and its surrounding district has been central in a long and at times troubled history, as a consequence we have so many monuments and memorials that it would be too much to list them all on a web page. So we have provided a downloadable document:

Download your Monuments and Memorials PDF Guide here

The guide lists monuments and war memorials located with the Carlisle City Council geographical area. It is a “work in progress” and will be added to as further information becomes available.

We hope to provide up-to-date information on the location of the monuments and their purpose. In the document you will find an image of the monument, a brief description, comments on the purpose, the event or person being commemorated, the condition and responsibility for maintenance or ownership.

Further information, corrections to the existing monument information and monuments to add to the schedule would be welcomed

Following the additional government advice regarding social distancing and mass gatherings, we’ve taken steps to delay the spread of Coronavirus and will divert our resources to critical services.

We will continue to provide services, ensuring that we’re doing all we can to support our residents and local communities. We are working with partners on the response to this emergency, focusing on the needs of the most vulnerable.

An update on other services is as follows:

Customer Contact Centre update

Our Civic Centre Customer Contact Centre will reopen for face to face pre-booked appointments from Monday 17 August.

Appointments can be made by calling 01228 817200 or by emailing [email protected]

Safety measures will be put in place for visitors and council staff, this includes social distancing measures and hand sanitising points. When a customer books an appointment, instructions will be issued of how to enter the contact centre safely.

We will endeavour to resolve queries by either by phone or email before making a face to face appointment to ensure we are keeping customers and staff as safe as possible.

Shopmobility

Our shopmobility scheme reopened on Monday 6 July.

The scheme, based in The Lanes Shopping Centre, was temporarily closed during the coronavirus lockdown. Its usual opening hours are 10am and 4pm, Monday - Friday.

Based on level two of The Lanes car park, it provides powered scooters and wheelchairs (both manual and powered) for people with mobility difficulties, to help them shop and use the facilities in Carlisle city centre.

To use the service there is a charge of £2 per day. Alternatively there are memberships options - £5 for six months or £10 for a year.
