Monuments and Memorials

Carlisle and its surrounding district has been central in a long and at times troubled history, as a consequence we have so many monuments and memorials that it would be too much to list them all on a web page. So we have provided a downloadable document:

Download your Monuments and Memorials PDF Guide here

The guide lists monuments and war memorials located with the Carlisle City Council geographical area. It is a “work in progress” and will be added to as further information becomes available.

We hope to provide up-to-date information on the location of the monuments and their purpose. In the document you will find an image of the monument, a brief description, comments on the purpose, the event or person being commemorated, the condition and responsibility for maintenance or ownership.

Further information, corrections to the existing monument information and monuments to add to the schedule would be welcomed

Have a green Christmas...
Christmas Tree Recycling
Do you need help recycling your real Christmas tree this year? Do you live or work in the CA1, CA2, CA3, CA4 8, CA5 6 or CA5 7 postcode area?
Hospice at Home is organising a festive fundraising initiative that not only recycles trees after the festive season but will also raise funds for the local charity.
Book your tree collection at and make a donation of your choice to Hospice at Home. On Monday 8 January the charity team and volunteers will collect the trees and take them to be recycled locally. Just leave the trees in your front garden or outside your property and Hospice at Home will do the rest. For more information about the Charity or the Christmas Tree Collections please visit
Kerbside Recycling collections
Please note that our recycling crews will not be collecting any Christmas wrapping paper this year.
Wrapping paper is often shiny, dyed, laminated, glittery or plastic backed, and cannot be recycled. This also applies to glittery Christmas cards.
Please place wrapping paper and the fronts of glittery cards in your refuse bin or gull-proof sack (or in a refuse sack beside your waste container on your first collection after Christmas if it won’t fit inside). You can recycle the backs of any glittery cards in your paper & card green recycling bag.
Thank you for recycling.
