Monuments and Memorials

Carlisle and its surrounding district has been central in a long and at times troubled history, as a consequence we have so many monuments and memorials that it would be too much to list them all on a web page. So we have provided a downloadable document:

Download your Monuments and Memorials PDF Guide here

The guide lists monuments and war memorials located with the Carlisle City Council geographical area. It is a “work in progress” and will be added to as further information becomes available.

We hope to provide up-to-date information on the location of the monuments and their purpose. In the document you will find an image of the monument, a brief description, comments on the purpose, the event or person being commemorated, the condition and responsibility for maintenance or ownership.

Further information, corrections to the existing monument information and monuments to add to the schedule would be welcomed

A consultation on a new Public Space Protection Order for Carlisle is now underway.

The new Carlisle City Council legal order aims to Keep Carlisle Clean and maintain the quality of the district’s environment and green spaces so that everyone can enjoy living, working in and visiting Carlisle.

To help the council achieve this, they want to put measures in place to deter anti-social behaviour whilst continuing to ensure that appropriate support is in place to protect some of the most vulnerable people in Carlisle.

A proposed Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) aims to replace two types of orders which are already in place: a Designated Public Place Order (‘DPPO’), and a Dog Control Order. The existing orders place controls on the consumption of alcohol in public spaces and the behaviour of dogs and their owners.

The proposed PSPO will keep these controls in place and will place controls on other types of behaviour.

It is proposed that the PSPO will cover the full Carlisle City Council local authority area.

The ‘new’ behaviours to be addressed under the PSPO are:

  • Challenging anti-social behaviour by groups or individuals in the city centre public spaces and car parks within the district;
  • Smoking, consuming alcohol, drug taking and solvent abuse in play areas; and
  • Dogs excluded from enclosed play areas.

As part of the PSPO we are also introducing the requirement for dogs to be kept on their leads in the following areas:

  • Carlisle Cemetery and Crematorium;
  • Stanwix Cemetery;
  • Upperby Cemetery Manor Road; and
  • Talkin Tarn Country Park (designated area only).

The deadline for public consultation responses is Friday 19 January 2018.
